Eastern Wisdom: Background And Background

Oriental wisdom: background and background

The background and the background are concepts that appear in several Eastern philosophies. One of these aspects has given rise to what is called the “psychology of self-knowledge”. The different levels of consciousness are very important here, as well as the way in which they interact. These philosophies consider that by conquering these levels of consciousness, one can achieve the state of well-being.

Even if it is not strictly speaking from a scientific point of view, its coincidence with Western knowledge raises questions. Especially when a lot of these concepts like background and background are millennia old. It is therefore curious to see that they adjust to a great extent to the psychological schools developed by the Western world.

Both there and here, consciousness occupies a primordial place. The end goal in East and West is to achieve a high state of consciousness. Implicitly, we share the idea that ignorance is the source of error and misfortune. Therefore, well-being would be found through self-knowledge and its expression would be through consciousness. But let’s take a look at this in more detail.

Forms and life

For the so-called “psychology of self-knowledge”, the world of forms is the apparent world. It is linked to everyday life. What we see and perceive on a daily basis. The objects, places and situations that we have to deal with all the time. It corresponds to what we call “perception” in the West. Contact with reality through the senses.

This oriental point of view  says that our usual behaviors are part of this dimension. What we are used to showing the world. Our routines and the way we relate to others on a daily basis. The world of forms is deceptive because it only shows the surface. Perception in the West is also seen as a primary level of knowledge which can easily lead to error.

The background, a gray region

According to the Orientals, the background corresponds to an area of our being where the unconscious contents reside. It is there, more particularly, that we find very problematic aspects such as complexes and phobias. It corresponds to what we in the West call the “preconscious”. That is, everything we guess about ourselves but do not consciously know.

Some Eastern philosophies say that the bottom shelters very dense vibrations. These have repercussions on how we perceive ourselves and relate to others. They condition a good part of our behavior. This is where most of our fears, anxieties and susceptibilities reside. And all of this can only be overcome through self-knowledge.

The background, the world of the unknown

This Eastern point of view signals that the background is the deepest and most unrecognized region of all human beings. However, this is where a force of darkness and a force of light reside. All the vices and faults are in the dark area, and in the area of light we find the greatest virtues of every human being.

Therefore, it is in the background that we find the deepest reasons for our behavior. Defects are a force that limits our growth. They operate as an imperceptible energy that prompts us to act destructively or self-destructively, without our knowing why or how.

For their part,  the virtues are those which emerge at certain times, thus constituting a proof of our greatness. The concept of background corresponds to what we know in the West as the “unconscious”.

Background and background: consciousness

This view  asserts that when one succeeds in establishing a harmony or coincidence between background and background, consciousness emerges. It is the fruit of self-knowledge and allows the greatest human values to reach their fullness. It corresponds to the greatest achievement of life and, therefore, to happiness.

The background and the background are the levels of consciousness through which we usually move. When they come into harmony, values like love, sincerity, understanding, courage, humility, spirituality, fellowship and many more develop. In short, all these values which are extremely constructive for oneself and for others.

It is interesting how much Orientals place great value on preconscious and unconscious wisdom,  that is, that which dwells in the background and the background. It is not pure reason that leads to truth and well-being. Rather, it is reason applied to all that we have learned, which remains present in these gray and dark areas that inhabit us.

Finally,  in the East, great value is also given to one of the maxims that founded Western culture: “Know thyself”. Even though we are separated by great distances and great dissonances in time, many aspects and conclusions are similar.
