Today, the franchise of Shrek already has 4 films which constitute the main network. These films are Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek: There Was an End (2010). In addition, a lot of “Christmas specials” were produced and, of course, the movie Puss in Boots .

An unusual princess

Princess Fiona is a beautiful young woman locked in a tower protected by a terrible dragon. No one knows why her parents decided to deprive her of her childhood and youth in this distant tower. According to legend, only a brave knight on the back of his trusty steed will be able to save her.

However, Fiona is hiding a terrible secret; she is the victim of a spell, and every night she becomes an ogre, then resumes her human form at sunrise. As in many princess tales, this spell can only be broken with the kiss of her true love. Fiona knows that the knight who will come to pick her up will be able to break the curse. This is the reason why she is initially very disappointed when she sees Shrek and The Donkey arrive in her tower to save her. After all, Shrek is a lousy ogre.

Even though they look very different, Fiona and Shrek have a lot in common. As the story progresses, Fiona realizes that Shrek is her true love. At the end of the first film, Fiona and Shrek both confess their love. And so, Fiona decides to go live in a swamp, with the ogre of her life.

In the following films, the creators explore this dichotomy between the lives of Princess Fiona and Shrek. While Fiona grew up in wealth, Shrek always lived in poverty.

Even though the movies center around Shrek, it’s important to understand that Fiona is an incredibly brave woman. It is she and she alone who constantly decides which direction to take her life. For example, she refuses to marry the Enchanting Prince or Lord Farquaad, and also decides to live in the marias, when she could live in a castle. Fiona gives up her privileges in favor of her own happiness and her own independence.

Princess Fiona in Once Upon an End

The film that most explicitly shows Princess Fiona as mistress of her fate is probably the last one, There Was an End . In this film, Shrek is a young father, tired of the routine of his parenting life. Through a spell, Shrek goes back in time and changes the past.

In this new reality, Shrek was never born and, of course, was never able to save Fiona. Desperate, Shrek searches for Fiona and finds her in the middle of the forest. However, Fiona isn’t the problematic lady he first met; the princess is now the leader of an ogre rebellion, resisting the evil King Rumpelstiltskin.

Without paying attention to the fate that torments her however, Fiona manages to exceed her limits. She frees herself from the dragon and escapes from the tower. In addition, she also manages to assemble a huge group of ogres to depose the king. Fiona doesn’t need a knight in shining armor to change her fate: she runs away on her own.

Are independent women and love incompatible?

Despite all her successes, Princess Fiona is still the victim of her curse. She can only break it by meeting her true love and kissing him. However, in this parallel reality, Fiona never falls for anyone. In her effort to be independent, Fiona forgets the love.

Many women today think that loving others limits them. They think that love will restrict their freedom and independence. However, loving and being loved doesn’t have to be a limit. Love turns people into teams, and teamwork can achieve a lot.

Become your own heroine

Women must dare to challenge their limits. Like Princess Fiona, you can’t wait to be saved by a prince. Each woman has the capacity to be her own heroine.

At the same time, every woman should understand that love does not make her less courageous or less independent. Bonds of tenderness make you stronger, so rely on the support of others to achieve your goals.
